This is why here we say how to get your pet ready for a new baby counts if you really care this canine member(of course!)
Is it difficult to get dogs adjusted to a new family member? In theory, not difficult. But it does takes much patience to change dogs’ attitudes.
Make changes gradually in advance. A new baby may have dog’s routines changed. If it does, you need to make changes gradually in advance so that your furry friends will not attribute the changes to the new member nor get angry with him/her.
Share equal attention. You dog may have the sense of outsider when a new baby is introduced to the family. Remember to share them equal attention no matter the baby is around or not. You need to remind yourselves to consciously do this.
Give them regular exercise and play sessions. Exercise is an important means for dogs to release extra energy and keep calm. Social life helps reduce their anxiety, too.
Sniffing acquaintance. Before baby come home or before they meet formally, you can take a piece of baby’s clothes for the dog. Let it sniff and get familiar with baby’s scent. It will make it easier for the dog to accept the existence of a new baby without being alert to him/her.
Sound acquaintance. This is of great importance for sound-sensitive dogs. A new baby often cries hard at midnight. This can be a torture for parents as well as dogs. Let dog hear some not-so-pleasant noise of baby crying in advance. Your dog may get unhappy with the noise, but you have to be tough on this thing. Start with quieter crying sound.
Get dogs familiar with baby’s belongings. Cradles, toys, swings, etc. Prepare them before baby come home and give your dog some time to accept their existence.
Let them meet. In case the dog jump onto you when you come home from the hospital, greet it without baby. If you then find your dog at a good mental state, carefully let them meet. Don’t forget to praise your dog for behaving politely and calmly.
Supervise when they are together. During the period of infant to preschooler, your children’s being with pets should be supervised in case of accidents. When baby crawls, keep his/her limbs away from dog’s ears and tail. Dog’s growling is a clear sign of warning. Receive various signals from both parties to help them get along well.
For pet loving parents, it may be the ultimate happiness to see two angels you love most accompany each other and play joyfully together.
